Diwali
Trip Overview
Diwali is India's biggest festival, and the best way to feel it is from the inside. On a private Diwali tour with Luxury India Private Tours, you do not watch from behind a tour-bus window. You walk through lit-up bazaars with a local guide, taste fresh mithai, learn what the rituals mean, and, if you wish, spend the evening with an Indian family. Then you return to a heritage hotel that has its own diyas and rangoli at the door.
What is Diwali?
Diwali, the festival of lights, celebrates the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Homes are cleaned and decorated, clay lamps (diyas) are lit at dusk, families pray to Goddess Lakshmi for prosperity, and friends exchange sweets and gifts. The date follows the Hindu lunar calendar, so it moves every year, usually falling in October or November.
The five days of Diwali
* Dhanteras: the opening day, when people buy gold, silver or new utensils for good fortune. Jewellery and metalware markets are at their busiest.
* Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali): a day of early baths, lamps and preparation.
* Lakshmi Puja (Diwali night): the main evening. Families worship Lakshmi and Ganesha, light lamps and share a meal and sweets.
* Govardhan Puja: the day after, observed with food offerings and, in many regions, the start of the new year.
* Bhai Dooj: a day celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters.
Where to celebrate Diwali in India
Jaipur: our top pick. The Pink City's old bazaars are decorated with lights in the days before Diwali, and the shopping, sweets and rooftop celebrations make it easy to join in.
Amritsar. The Golden Temple is lit up for Bandi Chhor Divas, the Sikh celebration that falls on Diwali. Pair it with our Golden Triangle with Amritsar journey.
Udaipur. Lakeside palaces and ghats glow with lamps, and the water doubles every light. A good extension after Jaipur.
Varanasi. Dev Deepawali, about two weeks after Diwali, fills the ghats of the Ganges with thousands of lamps. Add it if your dates allow.
Delhi. Excellent for markets, food and gifting traditions. See the travel tips below about air quality after Diwali night.
Private Diwali experiences we can arrange
* An evening with a local family: lamps, rangoli, a home-cooked festive meal
* A guided walk through the illuminated bazaars with a local expert
* Mithai tasting and a guided sweet-shop visit
* A Lakshmi Puja demonstration at your heritage hotel
* Diya painting or rangoli workshop with a local artist
* A festive dinner at your hotel
* Fireworks viewing from a hotel terrace or rooftop
Why a private tour works best at Diwali
Diwali is India's busiest travel and shopping season. Roads are crowded, popular hotels sell out and some places close early on Diwali evening. A private vehicle and a local guide mean you are not stuck in traffic without a plan, you know where to go and when, and your hotel and dining are confirmed well in advance.
Practical tips
* Book early. Hotels in Jaipur, Agra and Udaipur fill up months ahead around Diwali. Start planning four to six months before your dates.
* The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. Diwali falls on a Friday in 2027, so we plan Agra on another day.
* Plan for a late Diwali night. Fireworks can continue after midnight. Ask for a quiet room if you are a light sleeper.
* Air quality. Smoke from fireworks, combined with seasonal haze, can affect air quality in Delhi and other northern cities around and after Diwali. We usually plan Diwali night in Jaipur and keep Delhi time shorter. Travellers with breathing sensitivities should talk to us.
* What to wear. Bright colours and light layers. Evenings can be cool. If you are invited to a family home, remove your shoes at the door.
* Be respectful. Diwali is a religious festival. Ask before photographing people at prayer.
